Government is investing $50,000 in Acadian and Francophone community radio stations.
Acadian Affairs and Francophonie Minister Lena Metlege Diab announced the funding today, March 14, on behalf of Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Leo Glavine.
The contribution will be divided equally among the four radio stations in Cheticamp, Inverness Co. (CKJM-FM), Isle Madame, Richmond Co. (CITU-FM), Halifax (CKRH-FM) and Clare, Digby Co. (CIFA-FM).
“The government is pleased to support initiatives like these to preserve and promote our province’s unique culture and languages,” said Ms. Diab. “Our Acadian and Francophone radio stations play a crucial role in the preservation of the French language in Nova Scotia, as well as the promotion and celebration of our vibrant Acadian culture.”
The radio stations also showcase Acadian songwriting, musical and creative talent from Nova Scotia, and allow their listeners – through programming from across Canada and around the world – to connect to other Francophone cultures.
“This is great news for the French community radio stations in Nova Scotia,” said Association des radios communautaires en Atlantique president Rose Madden. “This investment will allow the stations to concentrate on programming to ensure that they remain an important tool for Acadian and Francophone culture in our communities. We are very grateful for the support from the government of Nova Scotia.”
As part of the Culture Action Plan’s mandate to strengthen communities, the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage supports Acadian and Francophone community radio stations as promoters of Francophone innovation and creativity in Nova Scotia.
