Investing in the IWK

Over the last two years, the IWK Health Centre has seen a 14% increase in emergency room visits. Last year alone, that was 33,000 visits. Continuing our commitment to strengthen healthcare across Nova Scotia, the Province announced plans to double the size of the emergency room at the IWK.

Government will invest $1.4 million to complete the design and development phase of the project which is expected to begin in the new year with construction starting in 2020.

In addition to the doubling on the emergency department, government will also invest $6.9 million to help the IWK purchase a new MRI scanner and complete the renovations necessary to begin operations.

“We are pleased and excited that government is investing in areas of care that will increase access, facilitate more effective care delivery and meet the needs of patients and families we serve,” said IWK Health Centre president and CEO, Dr. Krista Jangaard.
